Rev. Bert Montgomery
Hello, and welcome to the website of the University Baptist Church of Starkville! As pastor, I’d like to share with you a few things which make UBC a unique congregation. Renting space from the Wesley Foundation on MSU’s campus, we gather together on Sunday mornings in their worship center. Not owning a building allows us to devote more of our resources to ministry needs in our community and around the world. Each Sunday morning worship service is unique. Some services are quite traditional with hymns and a piano; others are more “contemporary” with videos, guitars and praise/worship music; and still others are a blend of various worship styles.
Members of UBC are all over the socio-political spectrum; we see our purpose as a church to hold each of us to the higher unifying call to follow Jesus. Differences of opinion are common at UBC, as they are in most families; however, we also laugh a lot and enjoy being together. Our commitment to treating each other with love and respect as sisters and brothers in Christ trumps our differences, and it binds us together.
In my six years as pastor here, I have experienced UBC not as an organization or an institution; rather, UBC is, in every sense of the word, a community. I’m honored as pastor to serve a congregation committed to making church a safe and welcoming place for everyone – without exception. I serve on MSU's Safe Zone Advisory Board, and various UBC members are trained as Safe Zone allies. UBC Starkville is one of four Baptist churches in the state of Mississippi that is listed with www.gaychurch.org - a resource for people looking for safe and welcoming congregations.
Our website, like UBC itself, is a continuing work-in-progress. I hope you’ll look around the site and read more about us; and I hope that if you like what you see, you’ll come visit sometime and let us get to know you.
